Emergency contraception

The morning after pill is available to be supplied directly to the patient without a prescription.

Please visit our store at Connolly Station or our sister store (McCaffreys Pharmacy) in Dun Laoghaire.

What is the morning after pill?

The morning after pill (also called the Emergency Contraceptive pill) is a single tablet you can take to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex.

It is supplied directly to the patient, who must be over 17. It can be used if you forgot to take your normal contraceptive pill.

If you have a valid medical card, the consultation with the pharmacist and the supply of the morning after pill is free of charge.  If you do not have a medical charge, a fee will apply.

How does the pill work?

The pill (Ella One) works by preventing pregnancy after unprotected sex.  Although it is effective for up to 120 hours ( 5 days) after sex, the sooner it is taken, the better the expected result. The pharmacist will supply the tablet to you, after you have answered a few simple questions.
